I was told that this item is a “verizon locator” used in military planes. It’s in a metal box and has a device that you look into-kinda like binoculars or a scope of some sort.

Now we have the HUD or Heads Up Display that combinds many indicators into one presentation the pilot can see without having to glance into the cockpit instrumentation.
