you work for Uncle Sam…from what I understand they pick everything for you buddy be prepared to bend over and kiss some butts down the line for a while until you get your rank up haha.
You MAY have a box somewhere of choices that you would prefer—but whether or not Uncle Sam needs that isn’t up for you to decide–

Nope. You could end up in the F-35 Joint Strikefighter program, or be a trash hauler flying the COD on milk runs. Good chance you’ll end up in rotorcraft. Keep your fingers crossed.

No, based on a great many factors you are assigned to a platform.

you don’t get to pick. The Navy deploys you to what they need you to do. If you excel in training, that might give you a boost toward one specific area or another, but for the most part, especially early on in your career, they tell you what you do and what you fly.

The pilot candidates after initial flight school, choose what aircraft to transition into based off :
1. For each class the Navy gives a list of aircraft and how many slots for each :
IE:
4 slots F-18
5 slots EA-6B Prowler
3 slots P-3 Orion
8 slots HH-46 Sea Knight
14 slots MH-60 Seahawk
2. Then each student in the class is ranked from top to bottom , based on performance in flying, on written test, leadership and evaluations from the instructors.
The highest ranked student gets first choice of aircraft to transition into from the list, then it goes down the line, from the top ranked student to the lowest ranked student, who has to take what ever is left.
3. Each class has a different list, based on the needs of the Navy at the time, so there are class’s where no one gets fighters.
4. You can have to wait up to a year to start flight school after commissioning now adays. So you get to push paper in some office until then.
