As far as official stuff goes, check out http://www.faa.gov/pilots/training/
The FAA publishes tons of materials for pilots in training, many of which are available free online.
Unoffcially, there are many sites out there can help you understand the basics of flight and piloting.
As far as flight sim software – I don’t know of any that are free – at least not ones that you would want to seriously learn to fly with. If you can find a copy of FS2004 in stores, it should be relativly cheap, and it’s a great resource for pilots in training.
And of course, when you really want to get serious about it, contact your local airport and see if they provide flight training. Hands on experience is a must in this field, not just because thats the rules, but theres nothing more real then sitting in the aircraft and actually flying it.
Good luck, and have fun!

I would suggest that you go visit your local airport and visit the flight school. They will be able to get you tons of information on becoming a pilot, as well as a lot of school has quite a bit of flight material either to purchase or borrow for your training. In fact the flight school that I used to work as host a private pilot ground school that is free! To find a flight school and get more information you should visit the website http://www.beapilot.com/
Good luck and remember the skys the limit!
