I am a commercial helicopter pilot and have been working in the industry for over 18 years. A degree is not necessary to work as a helicopter pilot.
Find a reputable flight school with a proven track record to lay a solid foundation for your aviation career. The job market is gret right now and will be for the next few years.

If you don’t want to go into the military, don’t. There are ways to fly in the civilian world. It will cost a considerable amount of money, time, and dedication.
I would equate it to a four year college degree, that can be accomplished in one year. Most likely you will need to get your instructor certificate to help build hours, to qualify for most helicopter pilot jobs.
Good luck and fly safe.

I would just go in the army. If you go the civilian route you will be looking at 40k or more in debt and you will barely have any hours when you complete training. You will probably only be able to get a job as an instructor making 20k a year. As opposed to no debt and several hundred hours of flight time afterr your 6 years. Granted this will almost certainly involve a tour in iraq or afghanistan
