@silvereagle2061
The OBS heading selected is shown the same way as on the Heading Indicator where “24″ means 240 degrees and so on.

@FSFlyingSchool That OBS dial is very confusing to me. Single or double digits yet I have a 3 digit heading.

The problem I have is when your flying and ask ATC at your arriving airport for permission to land they almost ALWAYS give you the runway opposite your intended runway so you have to swing all the way around the city at the last minuet.

When you are flying an ILS approach you must set your NAV1 OBS to the runway heading as you approach it (while still several miles out). That is why in the video we show how to find the runway heading from Flight Simulator.
If the plane has a NAV/GPS toggle switch it must be set to NAV otherwise the GPS will be controlling the flight. Altitude – your instructor in FSFS will let you know if you are at the right height, as will your instruments which show your relation to the glideslope.

I’m missing something here. I was flying from Edwards CA. to Flagstaff AZ. The Flagstaff heading was 211. I set what I thought was 211 on my OBS dial. My KFLG was to my Northeast and my 211 heading took my plane Southwest away from my airport. Can you show us how the numbers on that OBS dial works. I was flying in circles. Also what all needs to be set? NAV? GPS? Also there’s something to do with the correct altitude for the ILS to “CATCH” my plane? Please explain more.

Glad you liked it! In FSX you will see an indication on your instruments showing whether you are above or below the * glideslope * for the runway in question. This is usually about 3 degrees but does vary. You will see this is the Cessna 172 and in the Boeing 747 – an indication of whether you are too high or too low. You can try FSFlyingSchool 2011 for free – just download the demo – and the instructor will be telling you about the glideslope when you fly!

I love your video but I also heard that you need to be “below” the ILS for the signal to home in on you or something to that effect do you know anything about this?

@lobbyhobbybobbydubob Yes you can do all the instrument flying you want without the autopilot.

so the only way to land with an ils landing with an aircraft with no gps is using the approach hold?
you cannot intersept the needels with out auto pilot in a ifr flight
what i’m trying to say is can you do this with out auto pilot? like file from VOR to VOR
But this time runway to runway using the vor needels?
just to make fling learnig skills more GOOD

@sam9524
Which aircraft are you using?
Also the ILS will only move the needles if you are picking up the signal. You can check that by listening to the morse of the signal by turning on your radio’s ability to play the sound from the NAV1 channel (see FSX or FS2004 help for how to do this). Make sure the morse you hear is the name of the ILS you want. If you hear no morse you are not picking up any signal at all and need to fly into its region.
