My dad is about 60 and had some flight instruction about 30 (40?) years ago in the Navy. He was a flight surgeon and was never a pilot. For a present, we would like to send him to a flight school that wouldn’t take too long, but would allow him to fly for pleasure.
It will take around 5,000-6,000 dollars for him to get his private pilot license and a minimum of 40 solo hours. For someone who just wants to fly for pleasure and is 60 years old just go to your nearest General Aviation airport and check out some flight schools there. No reason for someone that wants to fly for pleasure and is 60 years old to go to any type of flight academy. You could also get a sport pilots license but there are alot of limitations on what you can fly with that license only small "sport type airplanes"
Also your father must be in decent physical health and be able to pass a FAA class 3 medical which is not a hard thing to do at all.

My father flies to he just rents a plane from nearby and flies it. I have never rode with him but he says it is really fun. Tell your dad to go to a nearby small airport they probably have all kinds of info
Hope I helped

It depends on where your father lives. I would suggest that you visit http://www.beapilot.com/ they have a database of flights schools all over the country, may be a good place to start.
