In general only the top airline pilots jobs pay well. Other pilots do not make much money. Read this article:

Corporate pilot jobs are pretty good right now. The people that fly on these planes have lots of money and the price of fuel is not slowing them down much. Pilot pay is getting a lot closer (if not more) to what the airlines are making and job security is a lot better.
Find the right gig and you will have great pay and lots of time off. You also get to fly to fun places and stay for several days instead of the typical one night that the airlines have. Most companies will also get you a rental car so you can actually go out and see the area. You will eat like a king and the company will pay for it.
All these benefits make a little less pay well worth it.

Some corporate gigs pay very well. It’s possible to get good pay at an airline, if you’re fortunate to get hired at a good one and it stays in business that long.
Honestly, this is a tough business. There are certainly good paying jobs, but every pilot out there is fighting for that same job. If you want to do it, keep your grades up and concentrate on having good character. As you get older, be as social as you can and keep in touch with everyone. The only way to make good money in this gig is to know the right people.

A union airline pilot use to be the best job. It’s gone down hill over the last 20 years with all these LCC’s popping up avery 10 minutes. It’s actually pretty bad now with fuel cost where they are and companies coming after the employee’s to cover the losses. Hardly any US airlines hiring. Maybe Southwest and Hawaiian. US trained pilots have to go to Asia to find the airline jobs and they are plentiful there.
