I don’t know anything about flying planes, but I’d like to start. How much do lessons cost? What kind of license do I get?

Search online for “Flying Experience” near where you live. The price normally range from around £50 ($70) for a 30 minute to 1 hour flying experience/lesson, depending on where you go. You don’t need any kind of license to have a flying experience, or to take flying lessons.
It’s best to start off with a flying experience to see if you enjoy it, and if you do enjoy it the pilot who gave you the experience will gladly give tons more information about lessons.
By the way, this is the Astronomy & Space category, you might receive some better answers if you post this question in the Cars & Transportation > Aircraft category.
Good luck.

Go to your local small airport and ask. Most places offer flying lessons and will have information on costs and requirements. In some places your first lesson is free, just to get you hooked.

Now the other option, which is purely up to you, is join the military and take their flight training. You get to be an officer, get paid to fly and maybe have a career waiting for you after your enlistment term is up.

I like Nyx’s answer. Getting a basic private license only costs a small fortune. Additional “ratings” like instrument and multi-engine certifications can run up the bill. I remember one of my kids hitting me up for more cash by explaining the multi-engine: “It doesn’t go twice as high, or twice as fast, but it sure costs twice as much.” He and a nephew are commercial pilots now, with a whole pile of ratings.
