I want to be in the air force but i want to learn to fly a helicopter first. I know helicopter is hard and expensive to fly but i dont want to waste thousands of dollars learning to fly a helicopter. So is there any way the army can teach you to fly a helicopter for free?

You probably will not be able to just slide into a helo slot in any branch.
Army normally reserves those for Warrant Officers. Warrants are specialty track former enlisted personnel that have shown a high degree of proficiency as an “E.”
The Air Force has helos too. And, (un)fortunately, we don’t have Warrants. So your pay would be better in the blue as an “O”.
Talk to a ROTC recruiter while knocking out your college. He’ll know more about how you can ensure a helo slot.

I think you can learn t o fly a chopper in the army, navy, or airforce but they will want you to go to college while learning. I think rates for private lessons are around $100 an hour or more.

No. The only way that the Army will teach you is if you join as an officer or warrant officer, and even then it is highly competitive. The Army may give a lot of bonuses, incentives, and perks to soldiers, but it does not give free handouts to civilians who just want something for nothing.
Ask yourself… how practical would it be to just go spend $1.4 million on every person who wanted to learn to fly to with nothing given in return?
Also, even if you join the Army, become a pilot, and then want to join the Air Force, then you are out of luck. The Air Force is taking very few prior service personnel, simply because they do not need to. They do not have many slots and they have more than enough people beating down the door to get in.
Long story short, if you want the Army to train you, then join up.

Consider the National Guard – Get the same training, one weekend a month. More time for a life
