I always wondered, what makes that “thump, thump thump” sound everyone associates with helis. it know it’s the blades, but what exactly is happening.

The blades slapping the air. The distinct Thump thump thump, comes from mostly 2 bladed systems. More blades tend to produce a buzzing sound.

when a helo flies towards you at high speed, you may hear a more ‘cracking’ sound. thats the tip of the rotor breaking the soundbarrier on one side of the helicopter

Great video.

And its all about risk assessment. Obviously the pilot knows the canyon and knows where the wires (if any) are. The canyon is wide enough that you could auto to the river if need be.

Whenever I’ve flown canyons, I always do a recon flight well above the canyon to look for wires, emergency landing spots, etc. If you are prepared and know what you are doing, that type of flying isn’t all that dangerous. At least not all that much compared to flying over triple canopy jungle, etc.

As a helicopter pilot, presumably a responsible and mature one, maybe you should start wondering the same thing. We should all be policing the industry and doing what we can to make it safer for all. My question was merely to provoke thought in those who had the experience and maturity level to understand its importance. What are you flying and for who?

This is a privately owned helicopter under lease/contract and is being flown by its owner. I was a consenting passenger. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

excuse me if im wrong, but thats not a nap of the earth flight. Its a contour flight. I learned this in Air Assault school. Oh and yes, i agree with all who say this is dangerous. It is.
