t is possible. I had an Instructor (CW2) in flight school that was accepted and commisioned as an Ensign. He was in the right place, time and flight hours when the Coast Gaurd needed additional pilots.

Very possible, Army guys do it all the time. Just involves a relatively brief USCG Direct Commission Officer course and aircraft transition course (“t” course) to learn the new aircraft, same as if you switch to a new aircraft in the Army. USCG commissioned officer pay is much better than Army non comm CWO pay, plus there’s the added bennie of not getting shot at all the time…..
